Faith, Life

Love God with All of your Heart, Soul, and Mind

There is something that I’ve been learning since WAFBEC 2013 from what Bishop Oyedepo preached (yes Fisayo, this again 😁) and I thought to share with the hope it would help someone.

Once upon a time, when I was in my final year, a computer science friend told me she had failed a maths course twice already so I offered to teach her since it was my discipline and I excelled in it. When we started the lessons, I gave her a problem which involved differentiation to solve and she solved it but got the wrong answer. Then I give her a very simple problem which revealed the root of the problem. I asked her to differentiate sin(x), cos(x) and tan(x) and she missed it. The problem was in the fundamentals of differentiation, hence even though she understood the higher principles, she still failed in getting the correct answer.

In a similar way, our faith in God can have a faulty foundation and without fixing the foundation, no matter what we do, it will avail to nothing. God is not a man that He should lie, hence if it’s not working, the problem is with us.

“If faith isn’t working in our hands, yourself questions, why is it not working?” – Bishop David Oyedepo.

I found that there was something fundamentally wrong with my faith. God said I should love Him with all of my heart, mind and strength. He said the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. He said I should walk in all His ways and serve no other God but Him because He is a jealous God. He said I should trust in Him with all my heart. He said He is a rewarder of them that DILIGENTLY seek HIM.

Without having laid the proper foundation of faith I attempted to “reap the harvest of faith” which really was covetousness disguised as faith. Then I stumbled and got offended and angry at God and I turned my back on Him. All this I did thinking I was righteous.

Then I repented and started discovering a lot I was doing that the Israelites did and it got God really angry (murmuring and complaining)! What a self righteous hypocrite I am! I saw a lot of carnality in me and while the Holy Spirit was talking to me about those things I ignored His voice because in my eyes I was righteous.

We all need to be very sensitive to the Spirit and follow His leading. God is faithful. We must remember that while we are in the dispensation of grace and God has brought us out of Egypt and is taking us to the promised land, we must beware lest we follow after the Israelites example and refuse to put our whole trust in God. We have received precious promises just as they did and God has already done His part in fulfilling it, but if we do not play our part God cannot fulfil His part.

There is  a message flowing amongst Christian circles that puts more emphasis on sowing seeds to receive blessings from God than the fear of God. This is akin to seeking God’s hand not His face. This is why there are so many churches but corruption is prevalent in the land.

Think of it personally, does a person please you if you know all they want from you is money? Is this your best friend? Jesus was clear about this

24 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon ( deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in
(Matthew 6:24 AMP)

This is a great SIN against God and God cannot bless this!

22 Samuel said, Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim (household good luck images). Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king
(1 Samuel 15:22-23 AMP)

6 In burnt offerings and sin offerings You have taken no delight
(Hebrews 10:6 AMP)

19 If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;
20 But if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken it
(Isaiah 1:19-20 AMP)

2 For indeed we have had the glad tidings [Gospel of God] proclaimed to us just as truly as they [the Israelites of old did when the good news of deliverance from bondage came to them]; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because it was not mixed with faith (with the leaning of the entire personality on God in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness) by those who heard it; neither were they united in faith with the ones [Joshua and Caleb] who heard (did believe).
3 For we who have believed (adhered to and trusted in and relied on God) do enter that rest, in accordance with His declaration that those [who did not believe] should not enter when He said, As I swore in My wrath, They shall not enter My rest; and this He said although [His] works had been completed and prepared [and waiting for all who would believe] from the foundation of the world.
(Hebrews 4:2-3 AMP)

21 Acquaint now yourself with Him [agree with God and show yourself to be conformed to His will] and be at peace; by that [you shall prosper and great] good shall come to you.
22 Receive, I pray you, the law and instruction from His mouth and lay up His words in your heart.
23 If you return to the Almighty [and submit and humble yourself before Him], you will be built up; if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents,
24 If you lay gold in the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brook [considering them of little worth],
25 And make the Almighty your gold and [the Lord] your precious silver treasure,
26 Then you will have delight in the Almighty, and you will lift up your face to God
27 You will make your prayer to Him, and He will hear you, and you will pay your vows.
28 You shall also decide and decree a thing, and it shall be established for you; and the light [of God’s favor] shall shine upon your ways.
29 When they make [you] low, you will say, [There is] a lifting up; and the humble person He lifts up and saves.
30 He will even deliver the one [for whom you intercede] who is not innocent; yes, he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.
(Job 22:21-30 AMP)

6 Seeing then that the promise remains over [from past times] for some to enter that rest, and that those who formerly were given the good news about it and the opportunity, failed to appropriate it and did not enter because of disobedience
(Hebrews 4:6 AMP)

7 The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.
(Proverbs 1:7 AMP)

10 The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning (the chief and choice part) of Wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight and understanding
(Proverbs 9:10 AMP)

7 Be not wise in your own eyes; reverently fear and worship the Lord and turn [entirely] away from evil.
8 It shall be health to your nerves and sinews, and marrow and moistening to your bones
(Proverbs 3:7-8 AMP)

1 MY SON, if you will receive my words and treasure up my commandments within you,
2 Making your ear attentive to skillful and godly Wisdom and inclining and directing your heart and mind to understanding [applying all your powers to the quest for it];
3 Yes, if you cry out for insight and raise your voice for understanding,
4 If you seek [Wisdom] as for silver and search for skillful and godly Wisdom as for hidden treasures,
5 Then you will understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of [our omniscient] God.
6 For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He hides away sound and godly Wisdom and stores it for the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with Him); He is a shield to those who walk uprightly and in integrity
(Proverbs 2:1-7 AMP)

13 The reverent fear and worshipful awe of the Lord [includes] the hatred of evil; pride, arrogance, the evil way, and perverted and twisted speech I hate
(Proverbs 8:13 AMP)

11 Serve the Lord with reverent awe and worshipful fear; rejoice and be in high spirits with trembling [lest you displease Him].
12 Kiss the Son [pay homage to Him in purity], lest He be angry and you perish in the way, for soon shall His wrath be kindled. O blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are all those who seek refuge and put their trust in Him
(Psalms 2:11-12 AMP)

27 The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord prolongs one’s days, but the years of the wicked shall be made short
(Proverbs 10:27 AMP)

26 In the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and His children shall always have a place of refuge.
27 Reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may avoid the snares of death.
(Proverbs 14:26-27 AMP)

16 Better is little with the reverent, worshipful fear of the Lord than great and rich treasure and trouble with it.
(Proverbs 15:16 AMP)

33 The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord brings instruction in Wisdom, and humility comes before honor
(Proverbs 15:33 AMP)

6 By mercy and love, truth and fidelity [to God and man—not by sacrificial offerings], iniquity is purged out of the heart, and by the reverent, worshipful fear of the Lord men depart from and avoid evil.
7 When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him
(Proverbs 16:6-7 AMP)

23 The reverent, worshipful fear of the Lord leads to life, and he who has it rests satisfied; he cannot be visited with [actual] evil.
(Proverbs 19:23 AMP)

4 The reward of humility and the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life
(Proverbs 22:4 AMP)

17 Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord all the day long
(Proverbs 23:17 AMP)

21 My son, [reverently] fear the Lord and the king, and do not associate with those who are given to change [of allegiance, and are revolutionary],
22 For their calamity shall rise suddenly, and who knows the punishment and ruin which both [the Lord and the king] will bring upon [the rebellious
(Proverbs 24:21-22 AMP)

25 The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever leans on, trusts in, and puts his confidence in the Lord is safe and set on high
(Proverbs 29:25 AMP)

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob and publish it in Judah:
21 Hear now this, O foolish people without understanding or heart, who have eyes and see not, who have ears and hear not:
22 Do you not fear and reverence Me? says the Lord. Do you not tremble before Me? I placed the sand for the boundary of the sea, a perpetual barrier beyond which it cannot pass and by an everlasting ordinance beyond which it cannot go? And though the waves of the sea toss and shake themselves, yet they cannot prevail [against the feeble grains of sand which God has ordained by nature to be sufficient for His purpose]; though [the billows] roar, yet they cannot pass over that [barrier]. [Is not such a God to be reverently feared and worshiped?]
23 But these people have hearts that draw back from God and wills that rebel against Him; they have revolted and quit His service and have gone away [into idolatry].
24 Nor do they say in their hearts, Let us now reverently fear and worship the Lord our God, Who gives rain, both the autumn and the spring rain in its season, Who reserves and keeps for us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
25 Your iniquities have turned these blessings away, and your sins have kept good [harvests] from you
(Jeremiah 5:20-25 AMP)

No matter the promises we say we believe in, or the prophesies pronounced over us, or the giving we do, without the fear of the Lord these blessings will not manifest. This is why the Israelites spent 40 years in the wilderness instead of 40 days.

36 Teacher, which kind of commandment is great and important (the principal kind) in the Law? [Some commandments are light—which are heavy?]
37 And He replied to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (intellect).
38 This is the great (most important, principal) and first commandment.
39 And a second is like it:You shall love your neighbor as [you do] yourself.
40 These two commandments sum up and upon them depend all the Law and the Prophets
(Matthew 22:36-40 AMP)

Which commandment is first and most important of all [ in its nature]?
29 Jesus answered, The first and principal one of all commands is:Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God is one Lord;
30 And you shall love the Lord your God out of and with your whole heart and out of and with all your soul (your life) and out of and with all your mind (with your faculty of thought and your moral understanding) and out of and with all your strength. This is the first and principal commandment.
31 The second is like it and is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.
32 And the scribe said to Him, Excellently and fitly and admirably answered, Teacher! You have said truly that He is One, and there is no other but Him;
33 And to love Him out of and with all the heart and with all the understanding [with the faculty of quick apprehension and intelligence and keenness of discernment] and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is much more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
(Mark 12:28-33 AMP)

27 And he replied, You must love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.(Luke 10:27 AMP)

14 Now therefore, [reverently] fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in truth; put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the [Euphrates] River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord
(Joshua 24:14 AMP)

5 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might.6 And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts;
(Deuteronomy 6:5-6 AMP)

13 You shall [reverently] fear the Lord your God and serve Him and swear by His name [and presence
(Deuteronomy 6:13 AMP)

17 You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God and His exhortations and His statutes which He commanded you
(Deuteronomy 6:17 AMP)

8 This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success
(Joshua 1:8 AMP)

9 Know, recognize, and understand therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, Who keeps covenant and steadfast love and mercy with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations
(Deuteronomy 7:9 AMP)

12 And if you hearken to these precepts and keep and do them, the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the steadfast love which He swore to your fathers.
13 And He will love you, bless you, and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your body and the fruit of your land, your grain, your new wine, and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the young of your flock in the land which He swore to your fathers to give you.
14 You shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.
15 And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and none of the evil diseases of Egypt which you knew will He put upon you, but will lay them upon all who hate you.
16 And you shall consume all the peoples whom the Lord your God will give over to you; your eye shall not pity them, neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you
(Deuteronomy 7:12-16 AMP)

1 THEREFORE YOU shall love the Lord your God and keep His charge, His statutes, His precepts, and His commandments always
(Deuteronomy 11:1 AMP)

38 Establish Your word and confirm Your promise to Your servant, which is for those who reverently fear and devotedly worship You.
(Psalms 119:38 AMP)

13 And if you will diligently heed My commandments which I command you this day—to love the Lord your God and to serve Him with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being—
14 I will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil
(Deuteronomy 11:13-14 AMP)

22 For if you diligently keep all this commandment which I command you to do, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, and to cleave to Him—
23 Then the Lord will drive out all these nations before you, and you shall dispossess nations greater and mightier than you.
24 Every place upon which the sole of your foot shall tread shall be yours:from the wilderness to Lebanon, and from the River, the river Euphrates, to the western sea [the Mediterranean] your territory shall be.
25 There shall no man be able to stand before you; the Lord your God shall lay the fear and the dread of you upon all the land that you shall tread, as He has said to you
(Deuteronomy 11:22-25 AMP)

14 Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness—trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never].
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him My salvation
(Psalms 91:14-16 AMP)

1 IF A prophet arises among you, or a dreamer of dreams, and gives you a sign or a wonder,
2 And the sign or the wonder he foretells to you comes to pass, and if he says, Let us go after other gods—gods you have not known—and let us serve them
3 You shall not listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being.
4 You shall walk after the Lord your God and [reverently] fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice, and you shall serve Him and cling to Him
(Deuteronomy 13:3-4 AMP)

9 If you keep all these commandments to do them, which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God and to walk always in His ways, then you shall add three other cities to these three
(Deuteronomy 19:9 AMP)

3 Then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion upon you and will gather you again from all the nations where He has scattered you.
4 Even if any of your dispersed are in the uttermost parts of the heavens, from there the Lord your God will gather you and from there will He bring you.
5 And the Lord your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will do you good and multiply you above your fathers.
6 And the Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with all your being, that you may live
(Deuteronomy 30:5-6 AMP)

20 And may love the Lord your God, obey His voice, and cling to Him. For He is your life and the length of your days, that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
(Deuteronomy 30:20 AMP)

5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you:to love the Lord your God and to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and to cling to and unite with Him and to serve Him with all your heart and soul [your very life
(Joshua 22:5 AMP)

11 Be very watchful of yourselves, therefore, to love the Lord your God
(Joshua 23:11 AMP)

5 And I said, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, Who keeps covenant, loving- kindness, and mercy for those who love Him and keep His commandments
(Nehemiah 1:5 AMP)

10 O you who love the Lord, hate evil; He preserves the lives of His saints (the children of God), He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown for the [uncompromisingly] righteous and strewn along their pathway, and joy for the upright in heart [the irrepressible joy which comes from consciousness of His favor and protection].
12 Rejoice in the Lord, you [consistently] righteous (upright and in right standing with God), and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness
(Psalms 97:10-12 AMP)

6 By mercy and love, truth and fidelity [to God and man—not by sacrificial offerings], iniquity is purged out of the heart, and by the reverent, worshipful fear of the Lord men depart from and avoid evil.
7 When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him
(Proverbs 16:6-7 AMP)

18 And therefore the Lord [earnestly] waits [expecting, looking, and longing] to be gracious to you; and therefore He lifts Himself up, that He may have mercy on you and show loving- kindness to you. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) are all those who [earnestly] wait for Him, who expect and look and long for Him [for His victory, His favor, His love, His peace, His joy, and His matchless, unbroken companionship]!
(Isaiah 30:18 AMP)

7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, and He will have love, pity, and mercy for him, and to our God, for He will multiply to him His abundant pardon.
8 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts
(Isaiah 55:7-9 AMP)

4 And I prayed to the Lord my God and made confession and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, Who keeps covenant, mercy, and loving- kindness with those who love Him and keep His commandments
(Daniel 9:4 AMP)

1 HEAR THE word of the Lord, you children of Israel, for the Lord has a controversy (a pleading contention) with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no faithfulness, love, pity and mercy, or knowledge of God [from personal experience with Him] in the land
(Hosea 4:1 AMP)

8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and to love kindness and mercy, and to humble yourself and walk humbly with your God?
(Micah 6:8 AMP)

17 The Lord your God is in the midst of you, a Mighty One, a Savior [Who saves]! He will rejoice over you with joy; He will rest [in silent satisfaction] and in His love He will be silent and make no mention [of past sins, or even recall them]; He will exult over you with singing
(Zephaniah 3:17 AMP)

22 Shun youthful lusts and flee from them, and aim at and pursue righteousness (all that is virtuous and good, right living, conformity to the will of God in thought, word, and deed); [and aim at and pursue] faith, love, [and] peace (harmony and concord with others) in fellowship with all [Christians], who call upon the Lord out of a pure heart
(2 Timothy 2:22 AMP)

21 As for Me, this is My covenant or league with them, says the Lord:My Spirit, Who is upon you [and Who writes the law of God inwardly on the heart], and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouths of your [true, spiritual] children, or out of the mouths of your children’s children, says the Lord, from henceforth and forever.
(Isaiah 59:21 AMP)

31 Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
32 Not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was their Husband, says the Lord.
33 But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel:After those days, says the Lord, I will put My law within them, and on their hearts will I write it; and I will be their God, and they will be My people.
34 And they will no more teach each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, Know the Lord, for they will all know Me [recognize, understand, and be acquainted with Me], from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will [seriously] remember their sin no more.
(Jeremiah 31:33-34 AMP)

I compiled all these scriptures to demonstrate how much emphasis has been placed on these things in the bible. We cannot afford to get the foundation wrong and think God will still be pleased with us.

Please forgive any typos… I think faster than I can write/type 🙂
